VTT180 - Tsuko-Tegata from Dōjima 堂島
This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional wooden travel plaque associated with Dōjima (堂島)—a historic district in Osaka known for its role as a center of commerce during the Edo period, particularly famous for the Dōjima Rice Exchange.
Crafted in the classic pentagonal shape, the plaque features a warm, natural wood grain with hand-painted details. The front is adorned with bold calligraphy reading “堂島”, accompanied by a simple landscape illustration that evokes the nostalgic atmosphere of old travel routes and merchant culture. The handwritten-style inscription adds a poetic, reflective tone, reminiscent of traditional journey keepsakes.
The reverse bears classic protective phrases including “通行手形” along with “交通安全” (traffic safety) and “家内安全” (household well-being), highlighting its function as both a travel token and a talisman for safe passage and daily protection. A red seal stamp further enhances its authenticity and vintage charm.
A braided cord in natural earthy tones is attached, along with a small metal bell that emits a gentle chime—traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and bring good luck to the bearer.
Blending historical significance with folk craftsmanship, this Dōjima tsuko-tegata is a unique collectible piece—capturing the spirit of travel and the rich mercantile heritage of Osaka.
