VTT179 - Tsuko-Tegata from Hōryū-ji 法隆寺

This elegant Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a striking vintage travel plaque associated with Hōryū-ji (法隆寺) in Nara—one of Japan’s most revered temples and home to the world’s oldest surviving wooden architecture.

Crafted in a refined pentagonal form, this piece stands out with its deep black lacquer-style surface, richly accented by ornate gold decorative corners and bold gold calligraphy. The front prominently features “法隆寺” alongside inscriptions for “交通安全” (traffic safety) and references to its cultural significance in Ikaruga, Nara. A vivid red seal adds an authentic touch of temple-issued charm.

The reverse is beautifully illustrated in gold linework, depicting iconic imagery of Hōryū-ji’s grounds, including the five-story pagoda (五重塔) and temple hall. A portrait of Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子)—the legendary patron of Buddhism in Japan—is also featured, reinforcing the deep historical and spiritual heritage of the site. Seasonal motifs such as persimmons and poetic inscriptions further enhance its nostalgic atmosphere.

A traditional red-and-white braided cord with a small metal bell is attached, producing a gentle chime believed to ward off misfortune and protect travelers.

Blending refined aesthetics with profound cultural meaning, this Hōryū-ji tsuko-tegata is both a unique collectible and a symbolic keepsake—capturing the enduring spirit of one of Japan’s most treasured World Heritage sites.
