VTT178 - Tsuko-Tegata from Bandai Kōgen 磐梯高原
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a vintage wooden travel plaque from Bandai Kōgen (磐梯高原), a scenic highland region in Fukushima Prefecture celebrated for its lush nature, volcanic landscapes, and tranquil lakes.
Carved from solid wood in the traditional pentagonal shape, the plaque features bold black calligraphy reading “通行手形” alongside “交通安全” (traffic safety), reflecting its role as a protective talisman for safe journeys. The surface shows a warm natural grain, enhanced by time and gentle wear, adding to its nostalgic appeal.
The reverse is beautifully illustrated with a colorful landscape of Bandai Highlands—rolling green mountains, flowing water, and native flora—capturing the refreshing atmosphere of the region. The inscription references Goshikinuma (五色沼), the famous “Five-Colored Ponds,” known for their striking hues created by volcanic minerals, as well as the broader beauty of the Bandai area.
A braided cord in soft purple and white tones is attached, along with a small metal bell whose delicate chime is traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and bring protection to travelers.
