VTT174 - Tsuko-Tegata from Mount Tsurugi 剱岳
This distinctive Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) wooden plaque is a commemorative travel talisman from Mount Tsurugi (剱岳), one of Japan’s most rugged and revered peaks in the Northern Alps, long associated with spiritual asceticism and challenging ascents.
Carved from finely grained natural wood, the plaque follows the traditional pentagonal form inspired by Edo-period travel permits. The front is inscribed with 登山手形 (mountain-climbing pass), along with 立山連峰標高2999米, indicating the dramatic elevation of the Tateyama mountain range to which Mount Tsurugi belongs. The bold brushwork conveys both authority and a sense of accomplishment.
The reverse further certifies the ascent, referencing 剱岳登頂 and serving as a symbolic proof of reaching the summit. Vermilion seal stamps reinforce its official and commemorative character, echoing the style of historical checkpoint documentation.
Suspended from a braided cord in muted tones, the piece is adorned with multiple small bells and a decorative tassel. The soft chime produced is traditionally believed to ward off misfortune and protect travelers and climbers on their journeys.
Blending mountaineering achievement with spiritual symbolism, this tsuko-tegata from Mount Tsurugi stands as both a meaningful memento of ascent and a protective charm embodying perseverance, courage, and safe passage.
