A vintage rustic Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼 chawan (茶碗) by Kyūdō-gama 九洞窯. The bowl has a gently irregular, hand-thrown form with a warm stoneware body covered in a soft grey-beige glaze. Across the surface, bold iron-painted brushwork creates an expressive botanical motif in the manner of E-Karatsu (絵唐津). The freely decoration contrasts beautifully with the subdued glaze, while fine crazing, small speckles and natural firing variations give the bowl a rich, time-worn character.

The slightly uneven rim, visible throwing marks and exposed clay around the foot embody the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi (侘寂)—an appreciation for simplicity, imperfection, natural materials and the beauty that develops through age and use. Rather than striving for perfect symmetry or uniformity, the bowl celebrates subtle irregularities created by the potter’s hand and the unpredictable nature of the kiln.

Karatsu ware developed in the Hizen region around present-day Saga and northern Nagasaki and became particularly admired as tea ware. Its restrained decoration, expressive clay and natural surfaces have long suited the aesthetics of chanoyu, where irregularity and the character created by earth and fire are highly valued.
