TC121 - Banko-yaki Matcha Chawan by Sakuma Hozan V 佐久間芳山
Vintage item, never used. A charming and collectible Banko-yaki 萬古焼 matcha bowl made by Sakuma Hozan V 五代目 佐久間芳山, the fifth-generation master of Shoko-gama Kiln 松古窯 in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture.
Sakuma Hozan V, born in 1930, is a highly respected Japanese ceramicist known for his work in Matsusaka Banko-yaki 松阪萬古焼. He comes from a distinguished lineage of potters deeply connected to the world of the Japanese tea ceremony. His father, Sakuma Shozan IV 佐久間勝山, was celebrated for producing tea utensils for the Grand Masters of the Omotesenke school, while his uncle Sakuma Hokyu 佐久間芳丘 was also a highly regarded traditional ceramic artist. Continuing this family tradition, Hozan V’s works reflect both refined craftsmanship and the quiet spirit of chanoyu.
This chawan features a soft grey-beige glazed body with a warm, natural texture. The exterior is decorated with a lively fox motif, shown wearing a red patterned garment and carrying a small banner. The playful design appears to reference Japanese folk imagery, possibly connected to Inari fox symbolism, where the fox is seen as a messenger of Inari and a bringer of good fortune, prosperity, and protection. The contrast between the humorous folk-style painting and the calm tea bowl form gives the piece a unique character.
