This charming vintage Japanese Mingei-style three-drawer chest (民芸和柄箪笥) is a compact storage piece decorated with a lively traditional wagara 和柄 pattern.
The exterior is covered in vivid red decorative paper, scattered with stylised Japanese folk motifs resembling tied pouches, wrapped treasures and auspicious objects. Deep indigo-blue borders frame the chest and each drawer, creating a beautiful contrast with the warm red surface. Three curved dark metal handles add to its nostalgic folk-craft character, while the drawer interiors are finished in a rich reddish tone.
Known in Japan as a komono-ire (小物入れ), this type of miniature tansu was designed for organising small personal belongings. It is perfect for jewellery, sewing accessories, stationery, keepsakes or other little treasures.
