VIntage item, never used. A refined set of Satsuma-yaki 薩摩焼 small yunomi tea cups (湯呑) in the elegant Shiro-Satsuma 白薩摩 tradition, decorated with a delicate chrysanthemum motif (菊 / kiku).
The set consists of five matching cups, each with a softly rounded form and a warm ivory-toned body. The surface has the characteristic fine crackle glaze associated with Shiro-Satsuma, giving the cups a subtle network of lines that adds depth and an attractive aged character.
Each cup is decorated with a graceful arrangement of seasonal flowers, dominated by chrysanthemums in deep reddish-brown, accompanied by smaller blossoms and foliage in soft blue, green, yellow and white. The muted palette complements the creamy glaze beautifully, creating a gentle and refined appearance rather than a heavily ornate one.
Shiro-Satsuma (白薩摩), or “White Satsuma,” is one of the best-known styles of Satsuma ware (薩摩焼) from Kagoshima. Traditionally distinguished by its light-colored clay body and finely crackled glaze, it often features delicate painted decoration and was historically regarded as the more refined branch of Satsuma ceramics.
The chrysanthemum (菊 / kiku) is one of Japan’s most important floral motifs. Long associated with longevity, refinement and autumn, it also holds a special place in Japanese cultural symbolism and appears frequently in ceramics, textiles and traditional decorative arts.
These smaller yunomi are ideal for serving sencha, gyokuro, bancha or other Japanese teas, and their coordinated floral decoration makes them equally appealing as collectible Japanese tableware.
Presented with the original signed wooden box, the set has additional charm as a complete vintage ensemble.
