A refined Akahada-yaki (赤膚焼) ceramic kōgō made by 7th-generation Furuse Gyōzō (七代 古瀬堯三) of Nara Prefecture. Furuse Gyōzō belonged to one of the historic lineages of Akahada ware, and the seventh generation formally succeeded to the family name in 1968.
This piece is known as a Musubibumi Kōgō (結文香合), a small incense container whose sculptural form evokes a folded and tied letter. This particular design also incorporates the appearance of a musubi-noshi (結び熨斗), a traditional tied gift motif associated with auspicious occasions and the idea of creating or strengthening bonds. The same form is therefore sometimes described as a Musubi-noshi Kōgō (結び熨斗香合).
The softly muted glaze, ranging from pale lavender-grey to warm beige, settles beautifully around the raised folds and edges, allowing traces of the reddish clay body to appear through the contours. Rather than relying on the well-known painted Nara-e decoration associated with Akahada ware, this piece focuses on shape, glaze and the natural character of the clay. The base bears the Akahada (赤膚) pottery seal.
In the Japanese tea ceremony, a ceramic kōgō (香合) is traditionally used during the ro season, from autumn through spring, to hold nerikō kneaded incense. During the charcoal procedure, the incense is removed and the kōgō may then be presented for the guests to appreciate, making these small containers an important expressive element of the seasonal tea gathering.
