This Inuhariko (犬張子) kōgō by Shōhō (昭峰) beautifully combines one of Japan's most beloved folk motifs with the refined functionality of a traditional kōgō (香合). Crafted in Seto ware (瀬戸焼, Seto-yaki) in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. The figure separates into two pieces to reveal a small interior compartment designed for storing incense.
Produced by Seto Tōgeisha (瀬戸陶芸社), a renowned ceramic workshop in Seto specializing in auspicious ornaments and traditional Japanese crafts, this piece reflects the region's long-standing reputation for finely crafted decorative ceramics. Seto is one of Japan's historic Six Ancient Kilns, celebrated for over a thousand years of ceramic production and its enduring influence on Japanese pottery.
Inspired by the classic Inuhariko, a traditional Japanese talisman dating back to the Edo period, the figure symbolizes safe childbirth, healthy children, family protection, and good fortune. Originally given as gifts to expectant mothers and displayed during celebrations, Inuhariko has remained a cherished emblem of happiness and protection for generations.
The design is by Shōhō (昭峰), one of Japan's best-known creators of seasonal and zodiac ceramic ornaments.
