This is a vintage Akahada-yaki Futaoki 赤膚焼 蓋置, a ceramic lid rest used in the Japanese tea ceremony. A futaoki is placed beside the kettle during tea preparation and is used to rest the kettle lid or bamboo ladle.
The piece has a simple cylindrical form with a hollow centre, making it both practical and elegant.
