This vintage set of three Kutani-yaki 九谷焼 guinomi was crafted by Shōzan-gama (章山窯), a kiln celebrated for its refined interpretation of traditional Kutani porcelain. Designed for enjoying sake in intimate company, these small cups embody the understated elegance and everyday practicality that have made Kutani ware beloved throughout Japan.
Each guinomi is formed with a gently rounded silhouette that fits naturally in the hand. The porcelain body is decorated in soft shades of cobalt blue over a milky white glaze, depicting a stylised bamboo motif rendered through expressive brushwork. The rhythmic vertical and diagonal strokes evoke the appearance of bamboo stalks and leaves swaying in the wind, creating a design that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics.
While Kutani ware is often associated with richly coloured overglaze enamels, this set reveals another side of the tradition through its understated blue-and-white palette. Slight variations in the hand-painted decoration give each cup its own individuality, highlighting the warmth and authenticity of artisan craftsmanship.
