SHP417 - Shikishi Artwork Chigiri-e ちぎり絵
A Japanese shikishi artwork created in the traditional chigiri-e (ちぎり絵) technique, featuring a colorful arrangement of flowers displayed in a deep blue vase.
The composition is built from carefully torn and layered pieces of Japanese washi paper, creating a soft, textured surface that gives the flowers a delicate, almost three-dimensional appearance. Shades of red, pink, white, yellow, and green are combined with the cool blue vase and pale background, producing a fresh and harmonious seasonal scene.
The flowers appear to include cosmos-like blossoms and other autumnal flowers, arranged loosely with natural movement. The torn paper edges are left visible, allowing the fibres of the washi to become part of the image itself and giving the work its distinctive handmade character.
Chigiri-e literally means “torn-paper picture.” Instead of cutting the paper with scissors, the artist tears pieces of washi by hand and layers them to create form, color, and texture.
Because the fibres remain visible along the torn edges, chigiri-e can imitate the softness of watercolor while also adding a tactile quality that is unique to paper art. It is especially well suited to flowers, leaves, and natural subjects.
