A striking vintage Japanese shikishi print reproducing Tansai Chototsu-zu (淡彩猪突図), a spirited depiction of a charging wild boar by the celebrated Zen master Takeda Mokurai (竹田黙雷, 1854–1930).

Takeda Mokurai was an influential Rinzai Zen priest and calligrapher of the Meiji and early Shōwa periods. Born on Iki Island, in present-day Nagasaki Prefecture, into a samurai family, he entered Buddhist monastic life at only ten years old.

During his training he travelled extensively throughout Japan, studying under prominent Zen masters, and in 1881 received inka, formal recognition of his spiritual realization, from Tokai Yūzen.

In 1892, at the age of 39, Mokurai became abbot of Kennin-ji (建仁寺) in Kyoto, one of Japan's oldest and most important Zen temples. During his tenure he played an important role in revitalising both the physical structures and religious life of the temple.

Known for his vivid personality, Mokurai also moved within Kyoto's artistic, political and cultural circles. Important figures of modern Japan, including statesman Itō Hirobumi, are known to have sought his spiritual guidance.
