K35034 - Naruko Kokeshi by Shinichi Kato 加藤信一
A Naruko Kokeshi by Shinichi Kato 加藤信一, a traditional kokeshi artisan from Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
This wooden doll features a beautifully rounded head with delicately painted eyebrows, gentle eyes, and a peaceful smiling expression. Its cylindrical body is decorated with a traditional red chrysanthemum motif (菊模様), complemented by fine red bands around the shoulders and base. The warm natural wood and softly faded pigments give the piece a nostalgic character.
Shinichi Kato born on July 22, 1920, in Naruko, Shinichi Kato originally worked for the Japanese National Railways before pursuing kokeshi craftsmanship after retirement. In 1976, he began training under Jun Ōnuma (大沼淳) and started producing his own dolls that same year.
His work follows the traditional Naruko style, particularly the distinctive diamond chrysanthemum pattern (菱菊模様). He also developed smaller shoulderless designs. Around 1980, his wife, Masami, began contributing to the painting of his wooden dolls.
