A Zao kokeshi by Yoneko Ishiyama 石山よね子 (1932 -), a Yamagata artisan whose work developed from the tradition of her husband, kokeshi craftsman Kazuo Ishiyama 石山一雄, while incorporating elements of the Zao Takayu school.

Yoneko Ishiyama was born on 23 February 1932 in Takase, Yamagata City, as the eldest daughter of a farming family. In 1954 she married Kazuo Ishiyama, a kokeshi craftsman from the Yamadera area. While assisting her husband in his workshop, she became increasingly interested in decorating kokeshi herself. From around 1972, she began painting dolls using wooden bodies turned by Kazuo. Their eldest son, Toshiyuki Ishiyama, also continued the family connection with kokeshi making.

Although she learned her basic painting techniques from Kazuo, Yoneko incorporated characteristic elements of the Zao Takayu tradition, gradually developing a recognisable personal style. This example has an especially endearing expression, with a large rounded head, gently closed smiling eyes, bold black side locks and a simple painted fringe. The tall cylindrical body is minimally decorated, allowing the warm grain and turning marks of the wood to remain visible, with softly faded reddish tones around the neck and lower body.
