A striking traditional Togatta-system kokeshi by Satoshi Sugawara (菅原敏, 1937–1992), a Miyagi Prefecture kokeshi craftsman who inherited the tradition of his father, Shoshichi Sugawara (菅原庄七).

This beautiful example has the distinctive, expressive character associated with Sugawara’s work. The doll features a large rounded head with finely painted closed eyes and a small delicate mouth, framed by bold black side hair and rhythmic red brushwork radiating around the crown.

Sugawara was born on October 3, 1937, in Akiu, Miyagi Prefecture, as the eldest son of kokeshi craftsman Shoshichi Sugawara. After finishing junior high school in 1954 and briefly working in other trades, he began assisting his father around 1955 and released his first kokeshi in 1956.

His mature works are admired for their powerful facial expressions, assured brushwork and strong balance between painted decoration and turned wooden form. In later decades his style became increasingly individualistic, with more unusual and exaggerated expressions that make his dolls readily recognizable to collectors.

Sugawara continued producing kokeshi until declining health greatly reduced his output in his later years. He died in 1992 at only 54 years old, leaving behind a relatively limited body of work spanning several important decades of post-war traditional kokeshi making.
