This elegant Sōsaku Kokeshi titled Chigozakura (稚児桜) was created by Watanabe Masao (渡辺正雄, 1917–2007), one of the most respected figures in the world of creative kokeshi. Renowned for his refined aesthetic and philosophical approach to woodcraft, Watanabe developed a distinctive style that emphasized simplicity, harmony, and the natural beauty of the wood itself. His works are admired for their quiet emotional depth and timeless modernity.

The title Chigozakura can be translated as “Child Cherry Blossom” or “Young Sakura,” evoking the image of youthful innocence and the fleeting beauty of spring. True to its name, this kokeshi possesses a gentle and contemplative presence. The softly rounded head, delicately painted eyes, and tiny red lips create an expression of serene introspection, while the smooth, flowing silhouette conveys grace and balance.

Particularly striking is the artist’s use of the wood grain. Rather than covering the surface with elaborate decoration, Watanabe allows the natural patterns of the timber to become an integral part of the design. The warm amber tones of the upper body gradually deepen into rich reddish-brown and black lacquered hues, creating a subtle transition reminiscent of cherry bark or the changing colors of nature through the seasons. This restrained palette reflects the artist’s belief that beauty emerges through simplicity rather than ornamentation.

Watanabe Masao's reputation extended far beyond Japan. Notably, kokeshi created by him were presented to The Beatles during their visit to Japan in 1966, symbolizing a memorable moment of cultural exchange between Japanese folk art and one of the most influential musical groups in history. This association further highlights the esteem in which his work was held both domestically and internationally.

Chigozakura exemplifies the mature artistry of Watanabe Masao: a harmonious blend of sculptural form, natural materials, and quiet poetic expression. More than a decorative object, it is a meditation on youth, nature, and the enduring elegance of Japanese craftsmanship.
