A charming vintage omiyage kokeshi from Arao Lake (荒雄湖) in the Naruko area of Miyagi Prefecture.
Arao Lake in Onikōbe (鬼首), part of the wider Naruko Onsen area in Ōsaki City, a mountainous region known for its rich natural scenery, hot springs, and long-established kokeshi culture. The nearby Naruko Onsenkyō (鳴子温泉郷) is one of Tōhoku’s best-known hot-spring districts and includes Naruko, Higashi-Naruko, Kawatabi, Nakayamadaira, and Onikōbe. The area is also especially famous for Naruko kokeshi, one of the major traditional kokeshi lineages of northern Japan.
This unusual souvenir kokeshi features a large rounded head with a gentle expression and bold black hair decoration. Its elongated wooden body is painted with a scenic landscape, evoking the mountains and waters around Arao Lake, while the calligraphic details further connect the piece to its place of origin. Arao Lake remains associated with the scenic Onikōbe district, where Arao Kohan Park (荒雄湖畔公園) is located today.
Unlike traditional lineage-based kokeshi, omiyage kokeshi were often created as keepsakes for travellers visiting famous hot-spring towns and sightseeing destinations. This piece therefore captures two important aspects of Naruko’s cultural identity: its celebrated kokeshi tradition and its history as a destination for hot-spring and mountain tourism.
