This charming vintage Omiyage Kokeshi comes from Izu Ōshima (伊豆大島) 1983, the volcanic island south of Tokyo famous for its camellias, dramatic landscape, and distinctive local culture. The inscription 「伊豆大島」 appears prominently around the wooden bucket balanced on the doll’s head.

The figure represents an Anko Musume / Anko-san (あんこ娘・あんこさん), the traditional image of a young woman of Izu Ōshima. The word anko is associated with the island’s local term for an older sister or young woman, and the costume became an enduring symbol of Ōshima. Historically, women on the island carried water in wooden buckets balanced on their heads, a practical response to the island’s volcanic terrain and limited water retention. This everyday working image later became closely associated with Ōshima tourism and folk souvenirs.

This kokeshi beautifully incorporates those regional details. The open wooden bucket on her head recalls the traditional water-carrying custom, while her dark patterned kimono, red obi and decorated head cloth give the figure a lively folk-art character. On the front of her body is a large red camellia (tsubaki, 椿), one of the best-known symbols of Izu Ōshima. Camellias bloom abundantly across the island, especially from winter into early spring, and have long been associated with the production of the island’s famous camellia oil.

The combination of Anko-san, water bucket and camellia motif makes this more than a decorative wooden doll: it is a small record of the landscape, working traditions and travel culture of Izu Ōshima. Its bold black, red, yellow and turquoise painting, together with the softly aged wooden surface, gives it the unmistakable nostalgic appeal of a Shōwa-era regional souvenir kokeshi.
