This beautiful vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi 創作こけし was created by Sato Kouson 佐藤香村, one of the notable female artists associated with Japan’s Creative Kokeshi movement.

Kouson began her kokeshi-making journey around 65 years ago in Koori Town 桑折町, Date District, Fukushima Prefecture, where she established the family workshop Kouson Kogei 香村工芸. At a time when kokeshi production was still strongly male-dominated and traditional makers generally followed strict regional conventions, she developed a more personal and modern approach, combining the warmth of natural wood with a distinctly graceful decorative style.

This example features a lovely camellia motif 椿 (tsubaki) painted across the body. The large red blossom, yellow stamens, dark leaves, and smaller buds create a striking contrast against the softly toned wood. In Japan, the camellia is admired as a winter-to-spring flower and is often associated with beauty, dignity, endurance, and quiet strength.

The doll itself has a warm and cheerful expression, with softly painted eyes, a small red smile, black hair, and a bold red ribbon motif across the top of the head. The upper and lower sections of the body are enhanced with carved, textured bands, adding depth and emphasizing the natural grain of the wood.

The combination of carving, natural wood texture, floral painting, and gentle facial expression gives this piece a particularly warm and feminine character, reflecting Kouson’s ability to balance folk tradition with the freer artistic spirit of Sōsaku Kokeshi.
