This charming vintage Omiyage Kokeshi (おみやげこけし) comes from Matsushima (松島), Miyagi Prefecture, one of Japan’s celebrated Three Scenic Views — Nihon Sankei (日本三景). The doll is signed Susumu「すすむ」
Rather than following one of the strict traditional kokeshi lineages, this piece was created as a regional souvenir kokeshi, combining the familiar wooden doll form with imagery closely connected to Matsushima. Its elongated body is decorated with a hand-painted landscape of pine-covered islands, water, a small architectural structure, and a vivid red accent, evoking the distinctive scenery of Matsushima Bay. White sweeping lines suggest the movement and reflection of the surrounding sea, while the natural grain of the wood becomes part of the landscape itself.
Around the upper body is written the well-known phrase: 「松島や ああ松島や 松島や」 “Matsushima! Ah, Matsushima! Matsushima!”
This humorous and much-loved verse expresses an almost speechless admiration for the beauty of Matsushima. It is popularly associated with the haiku master Matsuo Bashō, who famously travelled through the region, although the verse itself is generally not regarded as an authentic Bashō composition.
