The restrained palette and generous areas of exposed wood give the doll the rustic warmth associated with traditional Tōhoku kokeshi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMasataka Omiya (大宮正貴) was born on June 21, 1939, in Futatsuki, Yamagata City, as the third son of the kokeshi craftsman Yasujiro Omiya (大宮安次郎). His elder brothers, Yasumitsu and Masayasu, were also connected with the family's woodworking tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter finishing junior high school, Masataka trained in woodturning under his elder brother Yasumitsu Omiya. During the earlier part of his career he concentrated mainly on producing newer styles of wooden dolls, but from around 1968 he began exploring traditional kokeshi forms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor these works, he studied older dolls by his father Yasujiro Omiya as well as those of Chojiro Okazaki, consciously looking back to earlier models of the Zaō tradition.
