K25165 - Togatta kokeshi by Hironori Sato 佐藤博典

This Togatta-style kokeshi by Hironori Sato 佐藤博典 (1935–1965) is a rare and poignant example of mid-20th century craftsmanship, reflecting both the refined aesthetics of the Togatta tradition and the brief yet meaningful career of its maker.

The doll features a softly rounded head with a gentle, expressive face. The eyes are delicately arched and slightly downcast, conveying a calm, almost wistful expression, while the small red lips add a subtle touch of warmth.

The slender cylindrical body is elegantly proportioned and decorated with repeated red floral motifs arranged vertically, creating a rhythmic and harmonious pattern. These blossoms, accompanied by faint leaf-like forms, are complemented by simple red banding at the neck and base. On the reverse, a more freely painted floral design adds a touch of spontaneity, contrasting with the structured front decoration. The natural wood grain remains visible beneath the pigments, enhancing the warmth and organic character of the piece.

Hironori Sato was born in Aone, Miyagi Prefecture, and trained in woodworking under Yoshisuke Wagatsuma before studying kokeshi painting with his relative Kikuji Sato. He produced his works while helping run a souvenir shop at Aone Onsen, combining practical craftsmanship with artistic sensitivity. His life was tragically short—he passed away suddenly at the age of 31—making his works comparatively scarce and especially meaningful to collectors.
