Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria en abril de 1942, se unió al Arsenal Técnico de Aviación Naval en Yokohama, donde trabajó como diseñador, pero al final de la guerra, se unió a Kyoei Woodworks en Shiroishi en 1945, donde aprendió técnicas de carpintería. En Sendai, talló nuevos tipos de muñecas kokeshi, pero en abril de 1953, se independizó. Se trasladó a su casa recién construida cercana y dirigió su negocio allí hasta alrededor de 2008.
