This vintage omiyage kokeshi comes from the Kyoto area and carries a nostalgic image of old Japan through its depiction of a kago (駕籠) — the traditional hand-carried palanquin once used for travel in the Edo period. The motif gives the piece a strong historical atmosphere, evoking the elegant and scenic world long associated with Kyoto and its surrounding cultural sites.

The doll has a sweet and gentle expression, with softly painted eyes, a tiny red mouth, and a large red ribbon adorning the top of the head. Its tall, elegant body is especially distinctive, finished in a flowing black-and-grey marbled pattern created using a water transfer technique. This decorative process gives the wood a fluid, swirling surface, almost like ink or stone, and adds a unique visual character to the piece.

Around the middle is a natural wood band painted with a small narrative scene, including a figure in traditional dress and the image of a kago, adding storytelling charm and regional character. The contrast between the calm face, the bold marbled body, and the miniature painted scene makes this kokeshi particularly appealing.

As an omiyage kokeshi, this piece beautifully combines the simple charm of a wooden souvenir doll with imagery connected to traditional travel and classical Japanese culture. It is a lovely example of Showa-era souvenir craft, blending folk aesthetics with decorative experimentation.

A delightful collectible for lovers of Japanese folk art, vintage omiyage kokeshi, Kyoto souvenirs, and travel-themed folk crafts.
