K18159 - Traditional Tsuchiyu Kokeshi by Kazue Abe 阿部計英
This elegant Tsuchiyu kokeshi was created by 阿部計英 (Kazue Abe, 1937–2017), a respected inheritor of the Tsuchiyu woodworking lineage and a craftsman deeply devoted to preserving the traditional aesthetics of Fukushima’s historic hot spring kokeshi culture. Refined yet understated, this piece beautifully captures the quiet grace and disciplined craftsmanship for which Abe’s works are admired.
The doll features the classic elongated silhouette associated with Tsuchiyu kokeshi, with a slender tapering body decorated in vivid horizontal red rokuro lines. The head is crowned with concentric black rings — a distinctive Tsuchiyu feature symbolizing the marks of the lathe — while the delicately painted face conveys calm dignity through fine eyes, a narrow nose, and restrained expression. The balance between minimalism and ornamentation reflects the mature sensibility of traditional Tsuchiyu craftsmanship.
Kazue Abe was born in 1937 into a long-established family of woodworkers connected to the Tsuchiyu tradition descending from the Matsuya lineage. Both his father, Hiroshi Abe, and grandfather, Kinzo, were craftsmen, and Kazue himself began learning the lathe from the age of twelve. He formally apprenticed under his father in 1955 and later succeeded the family tradition following Hiroshi’s passing in 1984. Though he retired due to health issues in 2007, his dedication to kokeshi never fully faded, and he briefly returned to the craft in 2016 before his passing the following year.
Abe’s kokeshi are especially appreciated for their fidelity to older Tsuchiyu forms while maintaining exceptional technical precision and warmth.
