An omiyage kokeshi from Toba (鳥羽) in Mie Prefecture, a coastal city closely associated with the sea, pearl cultivation and the traditional ama (海女) women divers of the Ise-Shima region.

This unusual souvenir doll appears to portray an ama diver, one of the most iconic figures of Toba’s maritime culture. She is depicted with a pair of diving goggles resting on her head and holds a small wooden container topped by a luminous pearl-like sphere, a playful reference to the pearl industry for which Toba became internationally famous.

The figure has a cheerful hand-painted face with narrow smiling eyes, tiny red lips and delicately painted side hair. Her elongated wooden body is decorated with handwritten calligraphy and a colourful coastal landscape, including water, islands, pine trees and shrine-like architecture. Together, these details evoke the scenic beauty and spiritual character of the Toba and Ise-Shima coastline.

Toba has a particularly strong relationship with pearls and diving culture. The surrounding waters have long been worked by ama divers, women traditionally diving without modern breathing equipment to gather shellfish and other marine products.
