RARE! A wonderfully unusual vintage Japanese omiyage kokeshi, designed in the form of a candle with a movable bobble head.
The long cylindrical wooden body as a traditional candle, while the small kokeshi head rises from the top like a flame. Its elongated, pointed form is painted in vivid yellow and red, creating a playful visual interpretation of fire. The softly painted face has the gentle, slightly sleepy expression often found on mid-century souvenir kokeshi, and the loose-fitting head gives the figure a charming wobbling movement when touched.
Painted vertically on the body is the phrase: “Beware of fire”
This familiar Japanese expression has long been associated with fire-prevention campaigns and neighbourhood night patrols, particularly during the dry winter season. Traditionally, patrol groups would walk through residential streets calling out “Hi no yōjin!” while striking wooden clappers, reminding households to extinguish open flames and check stoves before sleeping.
The body is additionally decorated with small hand-painted motifs paper charms, giving the piece the playful graphic quality typical of vintage regional souvenir crafts. Its combination of candle imagery, fire-safety message and bobble-head construction makes it an especially distinctive example of Japanese folk-inspired novelty kokeshi.
