K10261 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Nikkō 日光
This delightful 1970s omiyage kokeshi set from Nikkō (日光) is a wonderfully expressive example of Japanese regional souvenir craft, combining simplified kokeshi forms with imagery inspired by one of Japan’s most celebrated historic destinations.
Located in Tochigi Prefecture, Nikkō has long been renowned for its mountain scenery, sacred forests and richly decorated shrines and temples, most famously Nikkō Tōshō-gū (日光東照宮), the magnificent mausoleum dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The area became an important destination for pilgrims and, later, domestic tourists, giving rise to a rich variety of locally themed souvenirs.
The body inspired by an old Japanese book, giving the set an unusual and playful sculptural character. Their tiny painted faces have the serene, closed-eyed expressions characteristic of many mid-century souvenir kokeshi, while the contrasting red and blue necks add a playful touch.
