This rare vintage Anko Ningyō (あんこ人形) is a traditional folk craft associated with Izu Ōshima (伊豆大島), a volcanic island situated south of Tokyo. The figure represents an Anko-san, the regional name traditionally used for the women and older girls of the island, whose distinctive clothing and working life became an enduring symbol of Izu Ōshima.
The figure is made in the ittō-bori (一刀彫) style and was produced by Yūbō (遊妨). Ittō-bori is a direct carving technique that preserves the crisp, expressive marks of the carving tool, giving the sculpture a simple yet strongly appearance.
The woman is shown wearing a dark patterned blouse and a vivid reddish-purple apron, with a cloth wrapped around her head. She balances a large wooden tub on top of her head while supporting it with one raised hand, recalling the local women who once carried water, goods and harvested products in this manner. Her restrained facial features, slender form and softly irregular painted decoration give the piece a warm and authentic folk character.
The word “anko” in this context does not refer to sweet red-bean paste. It is a traditional local term of address for the women of Izu Ōshima. Anko dolls became popular as regional souvenirs, preserving an image of everyday island life while celebrating the grace, resilience and hardworking spirit of the island’s women.
