K05074 - Omiyage Kokeshi set from Tōhoku 東北
This vintage omiyage kokeshi set from Tōhoku (東北) features a pair of rustic wooden dolls wearing distinctive kasa (笠) hats, evoking the traditional appearance of travellers journeying through the mountainous landscapes of northern Japan.
Each figure is carved from natural wood with a rounded body and a small, delicately painted face. Their most striking feature is the wide kasa-style hat, ingeniously made from a thin cross-section of a tree branch, with the natural bark still visible around the edge. Handwritten calligraphy decorates the surface of each hat, enhancing the handmade and folk-art character of the set.
The bodies are painted with small landscape scenes in green and earthy tones, accompanied by flowing Japanese script. Around the neck of each doll is a decorative braided cord finished with long tassels—one in deep purple and the other in bright orange—giving the pair a beautifully balanced yet individual appearance.
The kasa has long been associated with travellers, pilgrims and rural life in Japan, offering protection from sun and rain while walking long distances. In the context of Tōhoku, such imagery is especially evocative of old pilgrimage routes, hot-spring journeys and the poetic landscapes of northern Japan.
