FT592 - Arita-yaki Blue & White Maneki Neko 有田焼
RARE! A charming vintage Maneki Neko (招き猫) made in the tradition of Arita-yaki (有田焼), one of Japan’s most renowned porcelain traditions.
This piece features a classic blue-and-white (染付 / sometsuke) design, with deep cobalt decoration painted over a bright white porcelain body. The cat has a wonderfully expressive face, large alert eyes, a raised paw, and bold circular motifs decorating the body.
Arita-yaki originates from Arita in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, and has been produced since the early 17th century. Arita became one of Japan’s most important porcelain centres, celebrated for its refined white porcelain, cobalt-blue underglaze decoration, and later richly coloured overglaze wares. Its ceramics were also widely exported to Europe, where they became closely associated with Japanese porcelain and the broader tradition often referred to as Imari ware.
The Maneki Neko is a classic Japanese engi-mono (縁起物), or auspicious object, displayed in homes and businesses to invite good fortune. The raised paw symbolically beckons luck and favorable opportunities.
The combination of Arita porcelain, traditional blue-and-white decoration, and auspicious symbolism gives this piece a particularly elegant and decorative character.
