A charming vintage Daruma Otoshi (達磨落とし), a traditional Japanese wooden folk toy combining simple craftsmanship, playful skill, and the auspicious symbolism of the Daruma.
The toy is composed of a series of stackable wooden cylinders in red, yellow, blue, and natural wood, topped by a stylized Daruma piece. The Daruma is decorated with expressive hand-painted features and the kanji 福 (fuku), meaning “good fortune” or “blessing.” A long wooden mallet is included.
Daruma Otoshi literally means “Daruma dropping.” To play, the pieces are stacked vertically with the Daruma on top. Using the wooden mallet, the player strikes the lower blocks one at a time from the side, attempting to knock each one out while keeping the Daruma balanced above. The challenge becomes increasingly delicate as the tower gets shorter.
The Daruma itself is one of Japan’s best-known symbols of perseverance, resilience, and good luck, closely connected with the saying nanakorobi yaoki (七転び八起き) — “fall seven times, rise eight.” This makes Daruma Otoshi more than a simple children’s game: it humorously puts the Daruma’s legendary ability to survive repeated falls into practice.
