A graceful Kyō Ningyō (京人形) inspired by Shin Heike Monogatari (新・平家物語, “The New Tale of the Heike”), a modern retelling of the famous medieval epic The Tale of the Heike.
The original Heike Monogatari recounts the dramatic rise and fall of the Taira (Heike) clan during the late Heian period, and its stories of courtly beauty, warfare, loyalty, impermanence and tragedy have inspired Japanese literature, theatre and decorative arts for centuries. Shin Heike Monogatari, most famously associated with the historical novelist Eiji Yoshikawa, reinterpreted these legendary events for a modern audience.
This charming ceramic figure presents a young courtly woman in Heian-period dress, rendered in a soft, almost monochromatic white finish. Her long straight hair, layered robes and poised seated posture evoke the refined elegance of aristocratic women of the Heian court.
