Also affectionately known locally as “Hāko-san” (はーこさん), these distinctive dolls are one of Kurayoshi’s best-known traditional folk toys and have been handed down in the region since the late Edo period, around the Tenmei era (1778–1781).

Hakota dolls are traditionally made using the hariko (張子) technique: layers of Japanese washi paper are applied over a wooden mould, removed once dry, coated with a white gofun ground, and then individually painted. Traditional examples are characterized by their elongated form, pale face, restrained expression and vividly decorated kimono.

According to local tradition, the Hakota doll was inspired by the modest young women of Kurayoshi. Beyond being a child’s toy, it also came to be regarded as a protective charm for children, carrying the wish that they would grow up safely and remain free from illness and injury.

A beautiful example of Tottori mingei and Japanese regional folk culture, this little doll carries both the gentle personality of hariko and a tradition extending back more than two centuries. It makes a lovely piece for collectors of Japanese folk toys, vintage dolls, mingei, and regional crafts.

Size: 4 x 3 x 14cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/Cover_5ec252e4-6438-4311-9d91-55b842561afc.jpg?v=1786300247
https://maisonkyo.be/es/products/ft535-papier-mache-of-hakota-ningyo-%e3%81%af%e3%81%93%e3%81%9f%e4%ba%ba%e5%bd%a2
