FT474 - White Dove Whistle from Usa 宇佐
This charming vintage Shirahato-bue (白鳩笛, “White Dove Whistle”) is a traditional folk craft associated with Usa Jingū (宇佐神宮) in Ōita Prefecture, one of Japan’s most important Hachiman shrines. Handcrafted in a simple and endearing bird form, the whistle embodies the quiet spirituality and rustic warmth of regional Japanese folk traditions.
The white dove holds deep symbolic meaning at Usa Jingū, where it is regarded as a sacred messenger of Hachiman, the Shintō deity of protection, harmony, and martial virtue. Because of this connection, dove motifs became cherished talismans symbolizing peace, divine protection, purity, and good fortune. Pilgrims visiting the shrine traditionally brought home Shirahato-bue as meaningful souvenirs and protective charms.
Like many traditional Japanese clay whistles, this piece combines playful craftsmanship with spiritual symbolism. Its softly rounded shape, hand-painted features, and whistle function reflect the nostalgic character of old Japanese folk toys once enjoyed by both children and shrine visitors alike.
Today, Shirahato-bue are appreciated not only as regional folk crafts, but also as beautiful reminders of Japan’s shrine culture and handmade artistic heritage. A lovely collectible for admirers of Japanese folk art, shrine memorabilia, and traditional bird whistles.
