Each face is moulded directly into the warm, unglazed clay, giving the piece a wonderfully rustic and expressive folk-art character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAccording to one of Japan’s best-known legends, Benkei challenged passing warriors in Kyoto in an attempt to collect one thousand swords. His encounter with the young Ushiwakamaru ended in defeat, after which Benkei became Yoshitsune’s devoted retainer. Their relationship later became one of the most celebrated stories of loyalty, courage and companionship in Japanese history and folklore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pair also has a particularly strong connection with Hiraizumi, where Chūson-ji is located. Yoshitsune found refuge in Hiraizumi under the protection of the powerful Northern Fujiwara clan during the final years of his life.
