A vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Zuisen-ji Temple (瑞泉寺) in Kamakura, shaped in the form of a traditional mokugyo (木魚) and decorated with narcissus flower.
The bell has the rounded, compact form associated with a mokugyo, the wooden percussion instrument used in Buddhist temples during chanting and recitation. Its white surface is finished with molded details around the upper edge, while the front is painted with a bright yellow narcissus accented with orange and dark brushwork. A rustic brown cord passes through the top, reinforcing its simple folk-craft character.
The reverse bears the name 瑞泉寺 (Zuisen-ji), identifying its temple origin. Zuisen-ji is a historic Zen temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, known for its serene atmosphere and seasonal flowers.
The mokugyo form gives this small bell a particularly strong Buddhist character. Traditionally used to keep rhythm during sutra chanting, the mokugyo is closely associated with temple practice, mindfulness, and spiritual discipline. Combined with the narcissus motif, this dorei beautifully brings together Buddhist symbolism and seasonal Japanese aesthetics.
