This vintage set of Hikosan Dorei clay bells (英彦山土鈴) depicts the beloved characters Don Gabacho (ドン・ガバチョ) and Torahige (トラヒゲ), figures from the iconic Japanese children’s television puppet series Hyokkori Hyōtanjima (ひょっこりひょうたん島). Rendered in a playful folk-art style, the pair captures the whimsical humor and nostalgic charm that made the program a cultural phenomenon in postwar Japan.

Each bell is handcrafted in the traditional style of Hikosan Dorei, folk clay bells associated with Mount Hiko (英彦山) in Kyushu, a sacred mountain long connected to Shugendō mountain worship and regional folk traditions. Hikosan clay bells are known for their expressive forms, earthy textures, and humorous character depictions, blending spiritual folk craft with local storytelling culture.

Don Gabacho, recognizable by his distinctive mustache and top hat, appears alongside the cheerful Torahige, whose blue headwear and expressive features give the pair a lively personality. Their exaggerated facial expressions and rounded forms reflect the warm handmade aesthetic typical of Japanese folk toys and Showa-era character goods. As dorei bells, they also produce a gentle ceramic sound traditionally believed to bring protection and good fortune.

Both nostalgic collectibles and examples of regional Japanese folk craftsmanship, this charming pair beautifully combines television history, traditional clay artistry, and the playful spirit of Showa-era Japan.
