Raijin normally creates thunder by beating the drums surrounding his body, but here the mighty deity has somehow lost one and must awkwardly fish it back up.

The image turns an intimidating god into an amusing, very human figure. This kind of playful reversal is characteristic of Ōtsu-e, where religious figures, demons, animals, and legendary characters were frequently treated with humor, satire, and moral wit.
At a deeper level, the scene can also be read as a gentle reminder that even the powerful can make mistakes or find themselves in absurd situations — an earthy humor that helped make Ōtsu-e accessible to ordinary travellers and townspeople.

Ōtsu-e is a distinctive form of Japanese folk painting that developed around the 17th century near the city of Ōtsu in Shiga Prefecture, an important stopping point on the old Tōkaidō road between Kyoto and Edo.

Originally produced quickly and inexpensively for travellers, Ōtsu-e paintings included Buddhist subjects, demons, oni, animals, beautiful women, and humorous scenes. Over time, they developed into a recognizable folk-art tradition celebrated for their bold brushwork, simplified forms, satirical humor, and auspicious or moral meanings.

Size: 24 x 27cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/9746/7723/files/Cover_7723a431-d7ef-49c5-aa7b-de9c6c1ace56.jpg?v=1791257062
