The face is particularly distinctive: narrow almond-shaped eyes, fine arched brows, a long simple nose, and a very small mouth create a calm, slightly enigmatic expression. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTakahashi Chūzō was a respected Tsuchiyu-system kokeshi craftsman, specifically associated with the Sabako sub-lineage. Born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1893, he began training as a woodturner in 1910 under Watanabe Kakuji, while learning much of the practical turning technique from senior apprentice Ōishi Yotarō. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter establishing his own workshop in Haranomachi in 1919, he produced a wide range of turned wooden goods before beginning to paint kokeshi himself around 1923. His pre-war dolls are particularly noted for their narrow horizontal eyes and old-fashioned, understated expressions.
