Originally registered as Takahashi Hirohei, he began handling the potter’s wheel from a young age at Kitaoka Woodworks, under the guidance of his father and the renowned craftsman Sato Hiroki. By the time he finished elementary school in 1943, Kohei was already crafting traditional kokeshi. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter completing studies at the Agriculture and Forestry School in 1946, Kohei worked briefly in other trades before fully returning to woodcraft in 1951. By 1953, he had launched his own workshop producing both traditional and creative-style kokeshi, along with toys. He trained several others, including Sato Kesakichi, and in 1968 installed a potter's wheel at home to focus on older-style kokeshi. He also held leadership roles, such as chairing the Togatta Onsen Kokeshi Association.
